SAS Band Concert for The Mercury Phoenix Turst & Bone Marrow Appeal

Wow what a great night - pure fun from beginning to end. From the moment the band came on stage and Jamie began to sing the funky intro song, we knew we were in for a wonderful time. This gig was rather different from normal, as there were so many guests that it was more of a showcase for a whole series of celebraties, all donating their services to charity.

The first section saw lots of old favourites do some great numbers. Chris Thompson sang "Blinded by the Light" which we hadn't heard for ages, and a rousing "Dirty Mind" - always nice to hear that song live. The Fabba girls did a quick "Dancing Queen" before rushing off to another gig (!) We were treated to both Paul Young in the same gig this time: Paul Young I (Mike and the Mechanics) playing "All I Need is a Miracle" and "Every Day Hurts", and Paul Young II with "Come Back and Stay" and "Every Time You Go Away". Stevie Vann did a sexy "I Just Wanna Make Love to You", sidling up close to Jamie while she sang it. "Ain't he gorgeous?" she purred to the audience - "Yeeeaaah!!" we all shouted back! Mark Shaw was as charismatic and energetic as usual, singing "Live and Let Die" and his own "Big Area". Tom Robinson is always good to see, and this time he sang "Kid Charlemagne" and "2 4 6 8 Motorway" (TR: "I thought tonight I'd sing my greatest, er, hit." Jamie: "Yeah, but what a hit!")

Jamie was wearing these kind of blue-tinted glasses, like the ones Mark Shaw sometimes wears - I don't know whether he thought he looked cool in them or something ( ;-) ), but it made him look different - kind of older. Anyway, he only played a couple of songs with them on, and he made a cute face when he took them off, like he could finally see what was going on ;-) He was wearing leather jeans, black and white cowboy boots, his red check shirt and a black vest, and when he took the shirt off and was just wearing the vest he looked incredibly sexy ;-)

After the band had a break and the MPT raffle had been drawn, the Rocky Horror Show's Richard O'Brien took to the stage alone to do a fantastic rendition of "Time Warp" which had all the audience dancing along. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown was crazy indeed - he came on wearing a helmet with a huge flame rising from it to sing "Fire" and later leapt down into the crowd to sing the song to the middle rows! Roy Wood sang "Blackberry Way" and "California Man" before Damon Hill and Leo Sayer came on with Neil Murray on bass to play an excellent "My Generation" and "Roll Over Beethoven"

The regular band came back for the third section, and the moment all the Queen fans in the audience were waiting for -  the "Break Free" riff struck up and Roger Taylor came onstage. He was looking very nice, wearing a brown leather jacket and black trousers and looking very stylish! He was in fine voice and after Break Free he sang a beautiful "Magic is Loose" - the first time this song had been performed live - and "Radio GaGa", which of course got the whole audience hand-clapping in the chorus.

Fish came on to sing "Faith Healer" and Jamie brought out his dolphin guitar for the gentle ballad "Just Good Friends". More lovely guitar playing on "Through the Barricades" with Tony Hadley, who also sang "Hammer to Fall" - it was a good night for Queen fans! CT returned for the beautiful songs "For You" and "Show Must Go On", then everyone trooped back on stage for the grand finale of "With a Little Help From My Friends" and "You're the Voice". As Spike pointed out, seeing Roger, Leo Sayer, Paul Young, Damon Hill and Tony Hadley all singing at the same microphone was quite something.

You could say that Spike upstaged them all, however, when at the very end he pointed out his girlfriend and then proposed to her, much to the surprise and delight of everyone on stage and in the audience (she said yes!) Aaaah, how romantic! What a great end to a great night - all in all the gig had lasted over three hours, but I'm sure the audience were left wanting even more!
